Design, Build Join (DBJ) is a luxury cabinetry brand known for their high quality custom kitchens, cabinetry and furniture. Earlier this year their recent project, the Designer Rugs New Zealand Showroom, opened to the public. We sat down with Managing Director Paul Walkinton to discuss the showroom, and more.
Tell us about this project. What made it so unique?
We have designed this kitchen and barn door area with the Designer Rugs team. What a fantastic project as we were able to express ourselves but work closely with the client – it incorporates a custom brass handle detail and planked oak finished with black oil stain and a metallic charcoal highlight on the grain – neither of which have been done before. Spec Fabrication did this amazing raw steel finish, which has a unique protective coating which prolongs its natural lifetime.
What about your partners on this project?
We like to work with companies that share our solution based ethos and are prepared to work through all facets of complicated builds with us. We used Architectural Stone for the benchtops, Spec Fabrication, which is an up and coming architectural metal forming company, for the steel work, HI Class Glass for the splashback and Premier Appliances supplied the beautiful Gaggenau appliances.
What does your process look like?
In a nutshell it goes concept, quote, working drawings, manufacture, install. However, all of our work is custom. No two jobs are ever quite the same – customisation means you get to bring your dreams to life. We have run an extensive lean manufacturing program and invested in new scheduling technology – this keeps us ahead of the game.
What differentiates you from others in your sector?
Our workmanship and attention to detail both on our build quality and customer service. Many aspects of cabinet making are dying with the rush to pre-manufactured product. We are keeping that craft alive.
