Tell us a little about yourself, who is Cam Harris?
So obviously my name’s Cam Harris, I hail from the streets of Ponsonby, I’ve been studying the art of being a DJ now for over 15 years. When I get a spare moment, I produce my own electronic music which I’ve been playing around with now for about 7 years and have been lucky enough to have some of these creations released on local and international labels. I’ve even got some of my own music pressed to vinyl! I also plan, promote and manage dance music events for both Aura House Club and my own business under the name of Collude.
Why the change in music direction for Aura House Club?
The owners from Aura approached me with their vision of replicating a slice of Ibiza right here in the viaduct of Auckland city. However, it’s a very interesting time for electronic music in the world at the moment, especially if you love your 4×4 beat rhythms, as we can see a slow and steady spike of House music popularity in New Zealand amongst multiple age groups.
Do you need to know a lot about techno music and the music that’s played to have a good time at Aura?
Absolutely not, in fact that’s one of the parts of Techno that makes it, in my view, better than commercial music. It’s a step into the unknown, shock horror you may hear a track you’ve never heard before and you might like it!! Just leave the expectations and rules at home, come dance and forget the rest, but above all else have fun.
What makes the music at Aura House Club stand out in the Auckland clubbing scene?
A major flaw I find with many music clubs/venues in Auckland, apart from music selection as a whole, is the consistency. With Aura you can always expect for the time being that Friday’s will always be funky, whether that be disco, funk, boogie or soul or even funky house.
Saturday’s are more crafted on alternative weekends to either have Tech House or Techno and sometimes even Progressive house nights. The main thing I suggest is that when you check out Aura and really dig the music selection, have a look at our event guide on Facebook and take note of the name of the event that night, and of course look out for the next, cause we have a bi-monthly schedule we stick too.
What is the hardest thing to get right when managing the music direction?
I would have to say the hardest part would be, selecting the line-ups each month. As you can
imagine you may select the most amazing combination of DJ’s to play for an event, but then
you have to confirm they are actually free. It’s difficult when a DJ pull s out of playing last
minute leaving you trying to source a suitable replacement in a small amount of time.
What are you most looking forward to in summer?
I have been working on some really interesting acts coming from abroad to perform at Aura House Club, I can’t say too much more than that for now cause that would ruin the surprise!
